How does this work? LinkedIn doesn't support bold or italic.

LinkedIn doesn't support HTML or markdown formatting, but it does render Unicode mathematical alphanumeric symbols. Will my post look bold to everyone?

Yes, anyone reading your post on LinkedIn will see the bold or italic styling. The trick works on web, mobile, and the LinkedIn app.

Is this against LinkedIn's terms of service?

No. You're typing standard Unicode characters into a normal post. Many of LinkedIn's most-followed creators use exactly this technique. There's nothing automated and nothing that bypasses any LinkedIn rule.

Will screen readers read bold Unicode text correctly?

Not always. Some screen readers read each Unicode-styled character literally rather than as the underlying letter, which can be confusing for visually impaired readers. Use bold sparingly, for emphasising key phrases, not whole paragraphs. Don't use it for words that are essential to understanding the post (e.g. don't bold the entire CTA).

Can I edit a post after I've formatted it?

Yes. You can paste a previously formatted post back into the input here and click 'Plain' to convert the bold/italic Unicode runs back to ASCII. Then re-format and re-paste to LinkedIn.

Why use the markdown shortcut instead of the buttons?

Either works. Markdown shortcuts (**bold**, _italic_) are faster if you write your draft elsewhere first. The buttons are useful for selecting and styling text inline. The shortcuts also convert lines starting with - or * into bullet points.

When to use formatting

Use bold sparingly. One or two phrases per post is enough, bolding paragraphs makes posts look spammy and reduces accessibility for screen readers. Reserve emphasis for the key insight, the counter-intuitive claim, or the line you want skim-readers to catch.
